Google entering into Broadband business

by worthview on Feb.10, 2010, under mY Google

Google never stops surprising me.After successful launch of Google buzz, Google is now planning to become an Internet Service provider and it’s gonna raise web speed limit to 1Gbps which is more than 100 times faster than what Americans are enjoying right now.

The company said it will begin in certain test markets to offer broadband service capable of delivering bits and bytes at speeds 100 times what most Americans now receive from their cable and telephone companies.

The announcement is the latest in a recent series of moves by Google that appear calculated to help the Internet juggernaut leapfrog the existing technology establishment to position itself for the future.google-logo

As computer users spend more time communicating on social networks such as Facebook, Google this week unveiled Google Buzz, which aspires to knit together a variety of social networks into one grand collective.

Last month, Google released its first smartphone in a bid to challenge the way the wireless industry sells handsets. The move came as the company experiments with Google Voice, a service that allows people to choose a new phone number and relay calls to their other numbers.

Google grabbed global headlines with its declaration that it might spurn China over Internet freedom concerns, and it has been a leading proponent in Washington for “net neutrality” rules that would prevent online access providers from discriminating against those who would create certain content for the Web.

In each initiative, Google has said is trying not to upend potential rivals but to encourage innovation in hopes of expanding use of the Internet. It held to that claim in describing its new broadband initiative on Wednesday.

“We are not getting into the [Internet service provider] or broadband business,” said Rick Whitt, telecom and media counsel at Google. “This is a business-model nudge and an innovation nudge.”

The specifics of Google’s grand plan of providing the fastest  Internet connection to American homes include:

  • Next generation apps: We want to see what developers and users can do with ultra high-speeds, whether it’s creating new bandwidth-intensive “killer apps” and services, or other uses we can’t yet imagine.
  • New deployment techniques: We’ll test new ways to build fiber networks, and to help inform and support deployments elsewhere, we’ll share key lessons learned with the world.
  • Openness and choice: We’ll operate an “open access” network, giving users the choice of multiple service providers. And consistent with our past advocacy, we’ll manage our network in an open, non-discriminatory and transparent way.

Nexus one – Name of Google Phone

by worthview on Dec.14, 2009, under mY Google

Google is planning to  begin selling a cellphone directly to consumers as soon as next year. And the name of the phone is NEXUS ONE.googlenexusone

This was the pic that was leaked through tweeted pic.

Google is going to  sell the Nexus one ( Google Phone )  online and it will be unlocked giving Google complete control over the hardware and software with no pesky carrier interference, so you’ll need to buy your cellular service separately.

Although not yet officially announced, Google has coyly admitted that the phone is real and will be on sale early in the new year. In fact, it has provided the handset to its employees in order to test it out in the wild.

And the more interesting thing is – it has been already tracked by log stats.  Nerdy John Gruber of Daring Fireball found this user agent string in his site’s logs:

Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.1; en-us; Nexus One Build/ERD56C) AppleWebKit/530.17 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/530.17

Here are the details so far from mashable :

- Software: Android (Android) 2.1

- Hardware: HTC

- Specs (according to Jason Howell): Capactive touch screen, on screen keyboard only, thin, scroll ball, and animated desktop wallpaper

- Launch date: Rumored January 2010

- Tweets describe it as “an iPhone on beautifying steroids.”

- Google designed the entire user experience

- Google will sell the phone online, unlocked

- Google is “dogfooding” the Google Phone and has given it to employees all over the world to test it.

Expecting a lot many gifts for new year from GOOGLE  :) .

Google Reveals Details of Chrome OS – Chromium OS

by worthview on Nov.19, 2009, under mY Google

As they said  before in July, Google today open-sourcing their project as Chromium OS.

Description of  Google Chrome OS from  their blog:

“First, it’s all about the web. All apps are web apps. The entire experience takes place within the browser and there are no conventional desktop applications. This means users do not have to deal with installing, managing and updating programs.

Second, because all apps live within the browser, there are significant benefits to security. Unlike traditional operating systems, Chrome OS doesn’t trust the applications you run. Each app is contained within a security sandbox making it harder for malware and viruses to infect your computer. Furthermore, Chrome OS barely trusts itself. Every time you restart your computer the operating system verifies the integrity of its code. If your system has been compromised, it is designed to fix itself with a reboot. While no computer can be made completely secure, we’re going to make life much harder (and less profitable) for the bad guys. If you dig security, read the Chrome OS Security Overview or watch the video.

Most of all, we are obsessed with speed. We are taking out every unnecessary process, optimizing many operations and running everything possible in parallel. This means you can go from turning on the computer to surfing the web in a few seconds. Our obsession with speed goes all the way down to the metal. We are specifying reference hardware components to create the fastest experience for Google Chrome OS.

The source code for Chrome OS is already available here. Here’s the login screen:

From mashable , Here’s an early screenshot of the “Apps” tab in Chrome OS :

Here’s a Windows Live Office spreadsheet running on Chrome OS:
