My Happiest Memory of Malta

My Happiest Memory of Malta

I frequently travel alone as I want to explore the world as a lone-wolf traveler. However, last year, I had the pleasure of staying in Malta with my friends. A few friends and I went there to attend another friend’s destination wedding. Since all tickets and hotel reservations were pre-arranged, I had little trouble settling into the fresh new environment of incredible Malta. I loved the hotel’s proximity to the beach, the bus station and above all the shops. I found the Maltese people amazingly warm, friendly and welcoming.

Before going to Malta, I had only briefly heard about the place known for its exquisite beauty and exciting diving spots. I did not know much about the cultural and historical significance of the region. I managed to sneak out alone to spend some quality time with just me and the tranquility of Malta.

Valletta – The capital city

One of my happiest memories of Malta is when I went trekking through Valletta. I began at the bus station and continued walking down Republic Street. I came across the magnificent St. John’s Co-Cathedral in its Baroque splendor. The church is breathtakingly beautiful and features The Beheading of St. John the Baptist by Caravaggio. Not to mention, it is gigantic.

Later, I went onto the Palace Armory, the Grandmaster’s Palace, and the National Museum of Archaeology. I was able to catch a glimpse of an exhibition at the museum and learned about the wars and battles fought on Malta’s soil. I moved downwards to get to Fort St. Elmo for visiting the National War Museum and explored how Malta played a role in both the World Wars. I was not aware that Malta was awarded the George’s Cross for its bravery, which features on the flag.

The Shoreline

I walked along the shoreline and for a moment, I stood still in complete awe. Malta’s rich history and the memorials of the Second World War siege victims along with incredible sea views overwhelmed me. By the time I managed to reach the Upper Barrakka Gardens, I was breathless. This is because Valletta is quite steep. However, I was more excited to see all the notable sites Valletta proudly boasts. The Cafe Cordina, the Auberge de Castille, the modernized city gate, the harbors and the remnants of the Opera House are all sites that attract tourists from all corners of the globe.

One of my happiest memories in Malta is also rooted in my trip to the Silent City.  Mdina, Malta’s old capital city is a must-see and easy to get to with the one week bus pass. The pass costs just 7 Euros. The bus trip offers an hour full of exciting fun around the island before getting to Mdina. I was fascinated by the stories and the architectural history of the place.

Gozo – The hidden gem

Since I had a wedding to attend during the same week in Gozo, I decided not to tire myself out and went strolling and shopping in Rabat, for the rest of the days. I also went for a dive with atlantisgozo.com diving center.  Diving was amazing, it was my first time but I will be back for more.  I plan to go this year again but for diving and snorkeling in Gozo and Comino.
