India got BIGGER, did it get BETTER? Indian Census 2011 is here

The Registrar General of India has released the latest Census number for India, Census 2011 for the period 2001-2010, the first decade of the millennium.

Census 2011
Census 2011

India got bigger by adding 181 million population in these ten years, putting the total Indian brotherhood at 121 + crore population. India got bigger. Without going into the general problems of having a huge population or the advantages that we can get if we harness this huge population, lets see the incremental numbers to find out what has happened. I am hoping India got better.

The percentage decadal growth during 2001-2011 has registered the sharpest decline since Independence – a decrease of 3.90 percentage points from 21.54 to 17.64 percent. For the first time, there is a significant fall in the growth rate of population in the EAG States  (BIMARU states) after decades of stagnation.

Mostly for all of you who read the census stats, I feel the second most important number after population is literacy. We have IMPROVED !!!!

The literacy levels have increased from 64.83 % in 2001 to 74.04 %, almost a 9% increase, the highest ever for our country !! Specially to mention the increase in the literacy levels of Women which increased from 53.67% to 65.46 %. Though these numbers might be misleading unless we see other details (the increase can just be because of increase in overall population only ! ) , but I feel it a better acknowledgement of a mild improvement as the percentage increase is very high !

The Male-female ratio for the country has also increased from 933 to 940. This is a welcome sign, so far there are very less decades with less female population increase.

The density of population increased from 324 to 382. Make sure of this number, the more it swells the tougher it will be ! Especially the NCR region as well as the Maharashtra region has become highly dense and unless proper high level planning is done for urban population control and civic amenities, infrastructure, transport and communication, all we await is chaos.

Female male ratio at child birth (0-6 years) has worsened. Still the same state of sad affairs since independence.

Our Census, Our Future.

“Heroes are ordinary men and women, whoon motivation perform extraordinary feats inextraordinary times” – A tribute to all the Census functionaries. By far, our Census is the largest public operation in the world, which is being done with less than 2% error for the last 150 years !!!! Who said Indian bureaucracy is inefficient ?

And for all the civil service aspirants, especially the 2011 applicants (including me), this is to be rutted to the core if I am not wrong. Specifically, the first starting point: India is now 17.5 % of the total world population !!!

Thank you ,
