Project Ideas to Spark your Creativity in Photography

Project Ideas to Spark your Creativity in Photography

Photography is a fun hobby, especially if you have the right tools. Unfortunately, good photographs are not just about the tools alone – sometimes, it’s the creativity that helps make sure the job is done correctly. If you’re having a hard time finding that creative muse, it may be time to do some fun projects on the side.

Creativity can be a tricky thing to find, but it’s not impossible to achieve. Sometimes, all it takes are some new and unique ideas to spark your creativity and achieve your photography goals. Here are some project ideas to spark your creativity in photography, and hopefully these may result in amazing photos.

Try 365 Days!

This is an extremely popular do-it-yourself project when it comes to photographers out there, but it’s essentially what you think it is: you have to take a photo each day for an entire year. Thing is, there are a few caveats. In some versions, you may have to take a self-portrait and part of you should always be in the photo.

  • The fun part in this project is that at some point, you’d get too bored of getting the same angle that you’d start to add some creative knick-knacks and tidbits to your photographs. Perhaps in a few days’ time you’d eventually be wrapping yourself in things, or even just doing things that you’ve never even thought about before!

Try 52 Photowalks!

This is another extremely popular project, although sometimes meanings tend to differ. A regular photowalk might include people walking together throughout a city. This project will have the same group capture photographs from their own perspectives.

  • In this situation, 52 Photowalks don’t always have to involve other people. It should however inspire you to leave your home once a week in order to take photos of a location in the vicinity, but you can’t repeat the same location.
  • Interestingly, you’d find yourself researching ideal spots and ending up in parks, buildings, and even tunnels you didn’t know existed in your neighborhood. Be careful with the laws, though, as you don’t want to be trespassing on any private property.

Try 100 Strangers!

This is a project that takes guts, but it’s something you might find worthwhile. The idea here is throughout the course of the project, you should be approaching someone you haven’t met before and ask if you can take a photograph of them. Afterwards, try asking them if they can share a bit of their story with you.

  • The story itself can be almost about anything – why are they there? Who are they and what are they doing with their lives? You can try to make an entire photo album of inspirational stories you didn’t know were even there, and you may be inspired to do more when you meet more remarkable people.

Try A to Z!

This project is yet another unique trend that you can try out. The premise is simple: you simply have to pick a place and you have to take a picture of something that corresponds to a letter of the alphabet. If G is for Grass, what could be the other letters?

  • This is a fun exercise in creativity, as letter representations don’t always have to be objects, but concepts as well. For instance, Q can be Quiet, right? What’s quiet in this part of town?
  • The fun part is you can be extremely creative with your A to Z. You may even opt to find places starting with these letters, which can offer quite a challenge.

Try Pick-A-Something

In the literal sense of the phrase, this project involves getting a collection of something. You can do this to almost anything. Try picking a color and have photos of only that something, or try picking an object and getting photos of only that object across a certain time frame.

  • This project is a bit liberal, but it’s also constricting at the same time. It’s up to you to find your own photo limit and object limit, which means it’s up to you to explore with the kind of something you want to pick up and have fun photographing.

The project ideas above are not the only projects out there to spark your creativity in photography. Always remember that creativity is a continuous process, which means it still works best when you yourself mix and match and tinker with these ideas in order to get the perfect fit for you and your concepts. Finding that creative spark can be difficult, but it’s a worthwhile and fun process.

Photography can sometimes become a stressful hobby if you find yourself a bit lost as to where to begin, but once you get the hang of photography, the process gets easier and much more fun. These creatives projects can hopefully spark the bit of inspiration you need in order to get going and in order to create more amazing photos.
