You can not complete a trip to Jasper without visiting Maligne Lake, one of the most photographed spots in the Rockies. Maligne Lake is situated 46 km from Jasper town. You will come across some of the most aesthetic wonders of nature along the way. Ideally it takes approximately 6 hours to enjoy all the spots. However, you can take the first halt at Medicine Lake if you are short of time. Then, head to one of the iconic islands -Spirit Island. Spirit Island, set against a backdrop of glacier-fed waters and towering peaks will leave you speechless. You can access this Island via a scenic boat cruise. Looking for a peaceful experience, then the most popular option is canoeing or kayaking on the lake.

Visit Train Station

While you are in downtown Jasper, make sure to visit the train station. This place was built in 1926 & holds a very important place in history. It became a heritage site in 1992. You can walk through the past here and see some old pictures of Jasper. When you step outside the train station, you’ll spot the Two Brothers Totem Pole. It tells the story of two brothers and was built in 2011 to replace the Raven Totem Pole. Don’t forget to stop by Bear’s Paw Bakery for a warm cup of coffee and a delicious baked treat in the morning.

Ride the Jasper SkyTram

Jasper’s Sky Tram ride will take your Jasper experience to new heights, the highest and longest aerial tramway in Canada. WIth starting elevation of over 4,000 feet, it takes a 10-minute trip to the top in the enclosed gondola leading to over 7,500 feet.  Believe me, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding peaks, valleys, and rivers. This highest SkyTram was built in 1964.

Go Wildlife Watching

Jasper National Park is truly a haven for wildlife, and spotting animals in their natural habitat is one of the highlights of any visit. Be sure to watch for animals along the way! If you’re lucky, you might see bears, moose, elk, deer, sheep, and more. Especially when driving along roads like Maligne Lake Road and Pyramid Lake Road during early mornings and evenings.

Soak in Miette Hot Springs

After a day of hiking or exploring, unwind at the Miette Hot Springs, the hottest mineral springs in the Canadian Rockies. Located about 60 km east of Jasper, Miette Hot Springs may not be the closest of all Jasper’s attractions. However, surrounding mountain views, the warm waters offer a perfect way to relax and rejuvenate. The pool is fed from natural geothermal waters. Miette hot springs are open from May to October depending on the weather. The entrance fee is $17.50 for adults.

Stargaze in a Dark Sky Preserve

Jasper is designated as a Dark Sky Preserve, making it one of the best places in North America for stargazing. When you visit during the Jasper Dark Sky Festival in October simply head out on a clear night to marvel at the Milky Way, constellations, and even the northern lights if you’re lucky.

Visit Medicine Lake & Beauvert Lake

Medicine Lake is part of the Maligne River, but it’s so pretty that it deserves its own special mention! You can stop at the lake and enjoy the view. People who live nearby call it the “disappearing lake” because the water goes down into holes at the bottom, then travels through a cave and comes out downstream in the winter. If you visit Medicine Lake in winter, you can go to the North Viewpoint. From there, you can walk on snowshoes along the lake and see amazing views of the snowy mountains nearby.

Hike the Best Trails

Whether you’re a casual walker or an experienced trekker, Jasper offers hiking trails for all skill levels. There are various options to choose:-

  • Lake Annette Loop (Easy)
  • Pyramid Lake Loop (Easy)
  • Wilcox Pass (Moderate)
  • Bald Hills (Moderate-Hard)
  • Valley of Five Lakes (Easy)
  • Stanley Falls (Easy)

Pyramid Island

You can spend the last part of your Jasper trip visiting the beautiful Pyramid Lake & Island, just 6 km from Jasper. You can either ride a bike or hike to enjoy some peaceful time with nature. Be ready to see amazing views of Pyramid Mountain from both places. In winter, Pyramid Lake freezes over.
