5 Ways to Stay Healthy While Traveling

When traveling, your health concerns often take a backseat to all of the fun activities you have planned for your time there. You can get that second piece of cake, you’re on vacation! You don’t have to walk anywhere, you’re on vacation!

We’re not here to say you should come to your vacation and plan to uphold an extra strict diet and exercise regimen, but you should be health-conscious while you’re out traveling. So, feel free to splurge while you’re out and about, but take these small steps to ensure you’re staying healthy and fit while creating some lifelong memories and beautiful selfies.

Opt for Walking

When looking for a place to stay, you probably checked out the more central places. That means you’re closer to the big attractions, the main restaurants, and that awesome market that pops up on Saturday mornings.

Instead of taking a taxi or public transportation everywhere, head out for a walk. Even though it may take you 15 minutes longer, you’ll be able to stretch your legs and get some exercise in. Plus, you may find some secret hole-in-the-wall places you may not have discovered otherwise.

Prepare Meals

Eating out can be pretty expensive, and eating out three times a day can be triply expensive. If you have a mini-fridge or place to store food at your hotel, think about having breakfast and another meal there.

Not only will you be easing the pain on your wallet, but you’ll be able to pick out some healthier options for a few meals. When you’re out at a restaurant, you’d much rather choose something fun and different to eat instead of opting for a salad. Save the boring food for meals that you prepare yourself.

Drink Lots of Water

Have you ever had one of those days where you just forget to eat or drink water? Then you arrive home and realize that you didn’t even eat your lunch?

In this situation, you’re more likely to forget about drinking water. Sometimes, you can just get in the zone or concentrate on what you’re doing that you forget one of life’s most basic necessities.

Depending on where you go, you might be able to drink from the tap. If so, bring your own portable water filter bottle with you and make sure you carry this with you at all times. If not, be sure to buy a big bottle of water from the grocery or convenience store so you don’t have to keep buying bottles throughout the day.

Wash Your Hands

Well, of course, you’re going to wash your hands, but you need to be a bit extra careful when traveling. Your body and immune system may be exposed to all sorts of fun, new bacteria floating around out there.

Planes can be breeding grounds for sickness, so you should be extra diligent with your hygiene regimen. Carry some hand sanitizer with you or towels that you can use.

You don’t have to be the crazy person that walks around with a breathing mask or makes a big fuss out of touching doorknobs, but it helps to be extra conscious and aware.

Use Sunscreen

The beach isn’t the only place where you should be using sunscreen. You’re likely to be walking around outside for the majority of the day, and those pesky rays can burn just about anyone, anywhere.

Make sure you carry a bottle with you or at the very least, apply some in the morning before you decide to head out. Nothing ruins a vacation like a red, burned neck or peeling skin.

Stretch

You don’t have to be a yoga junkie to know the importance of stretching. Stretching is going to help keep you limber and feeling fit as you walk around the city throughout the day. You don’t want to have to head back early because of a pulled muscle.

Make sure you’re stretching your calves plenty if you’re planning on walking up and down hills. You can easily prop up your toe on a light post or sidewalk during the day, but other muscle groups can’t be stretched out so easily. Make sure you’re stretching out your quads and hamstrings before departing in the morning. Your body will thank you for it later!
