Anthropic has paused the two headline perks of its expanded Claude Startups program, the free year of Claude Team and the $1,000 in API credits, three days after announcing them. The Claude Startups page now says Anthropic is “currently over capacity” on both offers. Startups that already claimed them keep them. Approved applicants who had not claimed yet face a re-review.
In short
- Paused: the free year of Claude Team (up to five Premium seats) and the $1,000 in API credits.
- Still available: the Claude Startup Stack of partner offers (up to $45,000), Applied AI office hours, and member events.
- Already claimed: nothing changes, according to the program page.
- Approved but unclaimed: Anthropic will email these applicants to re-verify, and some may lose access.
- Unknown: Anthropic has not said when or whether the paused offers return.
What happened
Anthropic expanded Claude Startups on October 6, opening it to bootstrapped founders and adding a free year of Claude Team and $1,000 in API credits. The pause came on Thursday night, October 8, according to Forbes.
Sarah Wolf, Anthropic’s head of startup marketing, announced it on X. Forbes reports she said applications in the first 48 hours ran 21 times the number the program received in the previous five months, and that Anthropic had not tuned its acceptance criteria. Any company founded in the last five years, or funded in the last two, qualified, and Wolf said Anthropic “let way too many people in.”
The figure is not consistent across coverage. ExplainX cites “hundreds of thousands” of applications in a few days and treats the 21x number as unverified. Anthropic’s page does not state a count.
The response online was critical. Forbes quotes an X user saying Anthropic is now “associated with promises you can’t deliver on,” and Reddit users said verification was close to nonexistent.
What is paused and what is not
| Benefit | Status | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Free year of Claude Team | Paused | Was up to five Premium seats for organizations new to Team |
| $1,000 in API credits | Paused | Was valid for six months on the first-party Claude API only |
| Claude Startup Stack | Available | Partner offers worth up to $45,000, redeemed in the Console; terms set by each provider |
| Applied AI office hours | Available | 45-minute live sessions every other week |
| Member events | Available | Founder House, Founder Days, Builder Days and hackathons |
| Offers already claimed | Unchanged | The program page says nothing changes for startups that claimed |
| Approved, not yet claimed | Under re-review | Anthropic will email these applicants to re-verify |
The availability of the Stack, office hours and events comes from the program page and the coverage in Forbes and ExplainX. The Stack offers come from independent providers, so each can still change on its own terms.
What founders should do now
- Already claimed the Team year or credits: nothing changes, per the program page. Use the credits before they expire, six months after they were granted.
- Approved but not yet claimed: watch your inbox for the re-verification email, and check that your company-domain email and website match your application. Do not count on the perks until the re-review is done.
- Not yet applied: the Stack, office hours and events are still on offer to accepted members. Anthropic has not said whether new applications are being accepted, so check the program page before planning around any of this.
- Everyone: do not build a budget on the paused perks. The $1,000 and the Team seats were a trial offer, and the Stack discounts are set by third parties.
A founder who was going to use Claude anyway loses little. A founder who planned to cut costs with the free Team seats should wait for Anthropic to say whether they return.
What is still unknown
- When, or whether, the free Team year and the $1,000 credits return.
- Whether Anthropic will tighten eligibility, for example by adding stronger verification.
- Whether new applications are being accepted. The program page only says Anthropic aims to review applications within a week.
- How many approved applicants will be rejected on re-review.
This post will be updated if Anthropic publishes a restart date or new rules.
