Advantages and Disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence

Let’s face it, there are only a handful of things we can do without the help of technology. It has become such an integral part of our lives that most of us would absolutely be clueless without our phones and computers helping us out every day. From bus booking apps for transport to Universal IPL Machines for scar removal, technology has been able to do things that were once considered impossible. Most people are scared that artificial intelligence or AI for short would take over the world, but we’re pretty far away from that ever happening. Even though AI has been helpful to us in several different ways, it has its fair share of disadvantages too. Let’s take a look at a few advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence.

Advantages:

  1. Error reduction:
“It’s only human to make mistakes.” I am sure we must have heard this somewhere in our lives. But having an AI do your job allows for significantly fewer mistakes. Since computers process data much faster than a human brain, not to mention the accuracy at which these computers perform, it is safe to say that there is little to no risk involved when an AI is at the helm.
  2. Used in our daily lives:
From waking up to the sound of an alarm to calculating travel fares to checking your calorie levels, AI controls 75% of the things we do every day. Provides us with accurate information about everything around us, which makes life very convenient.
  3. Medical applications:
Most of the times, it’s difficult for a doctor to diagnose a problem that a patient is facing, simply because the patient is either unable to explain clearly what’s wrong with them or they are outright lying about it. Having an Ai store all the patient’s info can give information in regards to the changes in a patient’s body. This makes it easier to treat the patient as soon as possible. Not only can that but with laser treatments and Universal IPL Machines, patients get their skin altered according to their preference.

Disadvantages:

  1. Expensive:
Depending on what you need your AI for, it could cost anywhere from a few thousand to millions of dollars. Not everybody can afford a complex AI machine.
  2. Based on human values:
As powerful and fast as an AI could be, ultimately it works with values provided by humans. The results will be accurate only with the provided data. It cannot accumulate more data by itself unless specifically programmed to, which is a difficult task by itself.
  3. Taking over jobs:
With the increasing rate of technological advancements, it’s only cheaper and easier to make an AI do the work for you instead of hiring a new employee. Because of this, the unemployment rate is rapidly increasing every year.

These are some of the advantages and disadvantages of an artificial intelligence. No matter what your opinion is, everyone can agree that AI has made all our lives a lot easier and convenient compared to how it used to be a couple of decades back. You could argue saying that it has also made us lazier, but that’s a topic for another day.
