How to become an ITIL Professional?

How to become an ITIL Professional?

Let me cover some basics about ITIL that everyone should know before you plan to proceed with the ITIL certification.

ITIL stands for Information Technology Infrastructure Library. ITIL is a set of processes and best practices applied for successful IT Service Management. It is designed to manage the business risks, strengthen customer relations, establish cost-effective and pocket-friendly practices, and build a stable environment for growth, improvement, and change. In short, If I need to explain who is an ITIL professional, I can say that he/she is an expert in continually changing and improving the ITSM process.

One more thing that you need to keep in mind before you opt for the ITIL foundation training is that ITIL is not a framework based on any specific business model. But, it is a combination of all the approaches taken by experienced IT professionals.

I feel the information I provided is enough for you to get an idea of what ITIL is! Now, let us move to the main topic of the discussion.

Everyone out here would be wondering on how you can become an ITIL Professional and what are the steps that you need to take while attempting the ITIL certification exam. I personally had taken the exam, and I would love to share my way of how I prepared for the exam and how did Simplilearn helped me clearing the ITIL exam. Want to be one of the students who feels proud of being an ITIL Professional? Check the steps mentioned below.

  1. Keep a clear focus

If you are from the IT service management sector, and you aim to proceed further in the same field with improvisation in your output, then your pure focus should be on becoming an ITIL Professional.

  2. Take expert advice

Experts who are from the same field of work as your manager, seniors, etc. are the best people to suggest the right path towards a successful career. You can opt-out accordingly.

  3. Get in touch with Simplilearn

Once you have finally decided on taking the ITIL certification, the next step is to get in touch with the Simplilearn team, who can help you with a basic understanding of the ITIL certification. You can visit Simplilearn’s website and get in touch with their customer support to get inputs about the certification.

  4. Go through the course curriculum

A well designed and defined course curriculum is the need of the hour. And that is how Simplilearn’s curriculum is designed. Check the hours of knowledge sharing given by Simplilearn, compare the topics covered by Simplilearn with others in the same league, etc. which will finally help you to select the best in class teaching course for the ITIL Certification.

  5. Plan your study (You need to additionally take care of this step if you are working professional. As live lecture timings may vary from course to course)

As per my knowledge and experience, the maximum hours that are required to complete the whole syllabus of the ITIL certification are not more than 50 hours. And the maximum time you can take is not more than 8 weeks. So you need to plan your studies and work (if working professional) accordingly.

Let me give you an example of how I used to study simultaneously with my work. I had my focus ready. I wanted to complete the certification in 8 weeks. Knowing that overall, it may take 50 hours of my hard work in order to finish it, I decided to give 6 hours every week for ITIL certification. I used to attend the live lectures and go through the portion covered in like 3 hours. At the end of every week, I used to get ready with the topic covered during the lecture.

I used to manage my time during the weekends, which you can do it during the week if it is suitable.

  6. Always build a habit of taking down notes during the lectures (Depends on the type of course curriculum you have taken. There are 3 variants i.e., Self-Paced Learning, Blended Learning, and Corporate training)

I, since childhood, have developed a habit of noting down the important points during the lectures (which in case of self-paced learning, while going through the recorded sessions), which are quite beneficial during the last minute revision. Before going for the exam, it is not possible for you to go through every single page of the book, but you can go through these points which you had noted down during the lectures. (There is a possibility that you might not get the same points in any books. As Simplilearn trainers are industry experts, who at times, discuss points based on the real-life experience)

  7. Keep some target score in your mind

I have seen that working professionals aim at just passing the certification, but I would suggest you to at least aim for 75%. As it is beneficial for you in your work life as an ITSM consultant. Some of the scenarios you need to give a solution for in the exam, you may get the same in real life. So, you need to be attentive while the lectures are being taken, and you need to aim for as much as you can. The passing percentage is 65%. You may get all the information about the exam and its certification either by getting in touch with the customer service officers.

I frankly tell you that in case if you follow the steps I followed, then be assured that you will pass out the exam on a good note with good grades. I do believe that nothing is easy in this universe, but nothing is hard too. ITIL certification is not a big deal. It is just that you need to keep targeting with the right focus.

I hope that the guidance I tried giving was up to a point, and I wish you all the best for the certification. Cheers to all who are ITIL Professionals and those who are dreaming and planning to become an ITIL professional.
