How to Pack for Your First Trip Overseas

Packing for a trip to another country is different in some significant ways from packing for a domestic trip. For one thing, if you’re used to driving when you travel and you’re taking a plane instead, you’re going to have to be a lot more selective in what you take with you. You’ll also need to prioritize bringing different things. The tips below can help you organize your packing list.

Necessary Documents

One of the biggest differences about traveling abroad is that you need to have all of the required documentation or your trip will end before it even begins. Make sure you know what travel documents are necessary. This will include a valid passport, but depending on where you are going, you may need a visa or proof of certain vaccines. Do your research well in advance to make sure that you have plenty of time to obtain any necessary documentation, and once you have it all, keep it in a Ziploc bag or anything else that can help protect it from damage.

Toiletries

There are a couple of things to think about here. While you can probably get anything you forget wherever you are going, it might not be the brands that you like. In addition, you’ll have to take time out from your vacation to figure out what type of store to go to. You might then face a challenge deciphering labels if you don’t speak the language. So, it may be easier to take what you need, but then you have to think about quantities. You need your liquids to be 3 ounces or less if you are flying. Consider the basics that you need for a beauty routine. If you like to use 100% pure castor oil for hair growth and health, you’ll just need to take a small amount. This shouldn’t be a problem since it only takes a little bit every few days to keep your scalp healthy. You can pick up other travel-sized toiletries at your local drugstore.

Electronics

First off, find out if you’ll need an adapter and if so, what kind since plugs come in a number of different shapes and sizes around the world. The other thing to look at is the voltage, which may also differ. You should be able to plug in your phone or laptop in other countries, but you might not be able to use a hair dryer. The same could be true of an electric razor, an electric toothbrush and similar items.

Consider a Carry-On

You may also want to think about whether you should travel with carry-on luggage only instead of checking your bag. There are a few advantages to this. First, it’s probably cheaper. Many airlines now will charge for one or more checked bags. Next, it means that when you get to your destination, once you’ve made it through border control, you can go straight on to your accommodation instead of waiting around for your luggage to appear. Yet another advantage is the ease of being able to handle your own baggage without help. Of course, the drawback is that you can’t bring as much stuff, so you’ll need to learn how to pack light and compactly.
