How to Properly Care for Your Make-Up Brushes

According to research, the majority of people do not clean their makeup brushes as often as they should. In fact, a good number of people do not clean their makeup brushes at all. Are you among the significant number of people who use makeup brushes every day, and you haven’t yet come up with a proper cleaning routine?

If you are, you should know that it is vital to clean your makeup brushes often and to care for them. Knowing about skincare is just as crucial as having makeup finesse.   One significant way of caring for your skin is by cleaning your makeup brushes.

You will not be able to give your facial skin the care that it deserves if your tools are not well maintained. Just as you have a daily skincare and makeup routine, you can also set aside time for cleaning your brushes.

Why it is essential to clean your makeup brushes?

A dirty brush is a breeding ground for bacteria. Brushes accumulate dirt and dust particles from their surroundings. A dirty brush can end up causing skin conditions such as rashes, acne, and bacterial skin infections.

It is hard for an individual to get the makeup look that they are going for if the brush is dirty. While applying makeup to your skin, you want the colors to blend. But, it is hard for your cosmetic brands to blend if your brush is not clean.

If your makeup brush has residues left from the last time you were using it, the make makeup will not pop. Also, it will not appear smooth.

Dirty brushes will not only harm the health of your skin, but they will also cause a strain on your general health. Since a dirty brush has bacteria and dirt, it puts you at a high risk of getting viral infections.

A build-up on the face of makeup is not desirable. It would be best if you were also on the lookout for build-up on your cosmetic brushes. When powder or foundation cream builds up in your brush, it becomes rough, and it irritates your skin.

When you use the same brush every day to apply makeup, and you do not clean it, it can contaminate the rest of your makeup.

How often should you clean your brushes?

Washing your brushes will help ensure that they have a long life span. So, how often should you clean your makeup brushes? Well, it depends on how you use them.

You should clean the brushes which you use on your face to apply concealer or foundation at least once a week. Clean them occasionally since they are always in contact with your facial skin.

Brushes that you use around your eyes are as well sensitive. You should make sure to clean the brushes after every two weeks. Clean the rest of your makeup brushes every month.

Except for cleaning your brushes, remember to wash your sponges or anything else which you use to apply makeup to your face.

How to wash your makeup brushes

Washing your makeup brushes is a process, although it is not a long one. Before you get started, you will need some things. You will need:

  • A clean towel
  • Shampoo or another gentle cleanser
  • A cup
  • A silicone trivet

Once you have gathered up the things that you need, it is time to get started. Hold the handle of your brush and run warm water through the bristles of your makeup brush.

You want to make sure that the water is only running through the bristles. This way, the handle will not come into contact with running water.

After you have selected the cleanser that you will use, gush a bit of the cleaner on the silicone trivet. Move your brush in a spiral motion on the now soapy silicone trivet. Rinse off the makeup that is now starting to come off, and if need be, you can add more cleanser.

If you do not have a silicone trivet, you can pour the cleanser on the palm of your hands.

When the brush is finally clean, place it under running water so you can rinse the bristles. Use a towel to press out any remaining water in the brushes. After that, you can air-dry your brushes. Make sure that the bristles are facing downwards to avoid them getting the water back to the handle.

Place the brush across the top of the cup and leave it to dry. You can also place the brush facing upside down on a counter.

Make sure that you have a clean and organized place to store your brushes after they dry.

The lifespan of a makeup brush

There is only so much you can do to ensure that your makeup brush lasts long. You have to remember that the brush is not permanent. Beauty experts have advised that makeup brushes should be changed every three to four months.

You need to maintain high hygiene standards when it comes to caring for your makeup brushes. If you can do this, you’ll not only have healthy and radiating skin; your general health as well will be spot on.
