Seven Steps to Design A Nursery to Welcome Your First Baby

Are you expecting your first baby soon? Then it’s time to start designing the nursery before he arrives in the world! After all, preparing for your little one is the most fun part, especially when you have the freedom to design their nursery.

But how can you create the beautiful nursery room for you and your baby? Read on as I show you the different steps and tips to follow so you can bring the overall design altogether for an amazing room you’ll love staying in with your baby.

  1. Select a Good Theme

The first thing in mind when designing your baby’s new nursery is what theme it should be! This will be the basis on how you’ll design the entire nursery, making it easier to select nursery furniture in matching colors and patterns. It doesn’t matter whether you’re expecting a boy, girl, or will keep the gender a secret, you need to figure out the theme first!

Here are some examples I love:

  • Traveling, such as adding maps and colorful hot air balloon patterns
  • Camping, such as adding tribal patterns and animals
  • Transportation, such as cars, trucks, bikes, and planes
  • Patterns you love and would inspire you, like polka dots or chevrons

And the list goes on! You can find a lot of great ideas on nursery themes online, start from there!

  1. Choosing a Color Scheme

The color scheme and theme should go hand in hand. You may want to consider identifying three kinds of colors for the nursery, which are:

  • Bold colors
  • Complimentary colors
  • Additional colors that would pop for more design

For instance, a nursery can have a light pink, chocolate brown, and cream color scheme, which works amazing together. Or, you can opt for mint, gray, and coral!

These colors don’t really have to include your furniture colors. Just because you own dark wooden furniture doesn’t mean one of the colors is dark brown. You can still select three other colors that complement with what furniture and colors you already have unhand.

  1. Invest in a Baby Blanket

Once you have your color scheme, you can now invest in more furniture and baby products. An important purchase is a high-quality baby blanket!

You’re probably wondering: How does a baby blanket benefit your nursery design?

A baby blanket can tie your room together well, giving texture and anchor for all your decor. Besides that, they’re amazing for bedtime and cuddles, keeping your little one comfortable. It’s a win-win situation!

You can either invest in one on your own or have your friends gift you these kinds of small and useful baby accessories, making sure they know the colors and theme you want to achieve.

  1. Place Beautiful Artworks

While your little one may not be able to interpret what paintings and artworks mean yet, they are still a great addition to add design to the nursery.

Paintings, framed pictures, and other artworks can fill up walls rather than just place one small photo, which would look out of place. Opt for artworks that relate with your theme, or ones that look bold to avoid being too patchy but still tying together with the theme.

I like placing cute artworks I can purchase online and print on my own, or make my own for my little one to appreciate as he grows older. Photos can also work very well!

  1. Put a Baby Mobile

There is one thing babies (and visitors) will appreciate, it’s a baby mobile! Baby mobiles are amazing for your baby and the overall nursery design.

You can purchase a light baby mobile with dimension and interest, matching the patterns and colors of your theme and color scheme. You can even make one of your own for your little one to love, you just have to make sure that it’s secure and safe to put up.

Little ones will love looking up at baby mobiles, which piques their interest and helps develop their visual senses, and these baby mobiles would stay with them even as they grow older.

  1. Add More Greenery

All areas in a house need a bit of green, which can help bring more nature into the nursery for design and more benefits. Your nursery will definitely look brighter and homier with a few plants around.

What’s great is that you don’t even need to invest in real plants, which can take time and effort to care for (some parents can’t handle more tasks with the new baby!). You can invest in faux plants, which can add interest to “boring” corners, filling up the room naturally without looking cluttered.

  1. Get More Texture

One technique to add texture to a room is bunting, which is adorable, classy, and subtle. Plus, they double as decorations for birthday parties!

However, you can add way more little accessories and furniture to add texture to a nursery. Just make sure that it goes along with your theme and/or color scheme. You can add a lamp, wreath, or other small decorative pieces that would stand out and have your nursery pop more, beyond what colors can do.
