Steps to Clean the Carpet

  1. Clean the Carpet Regularly

It is recommended that you clean your carpet every four months with a carpet cleaning shampoo machine. If kids or pets are rolling over the carpet, you need to wash the carpet every month or so. Washing the carpet regularly will protect your kids from allergies and respiratory problems.

  1. Buy and use suitable cleaning products

For cleaning the carpet, you should always use a good cleaning solution. The cleaning solutions work perfectly with a machine as it will give the best results by not damaging or soaking the carpet. You can also use a shampoo that contains a carpet protector. The shampoo containing carpet protector will protect it from stains. If your carpet is made of wool, choose a cleaning solution that is safe for wool.

  1. Hire a cleaning machine

If you do not own a carpet washing machine or cleaning equipment, you can hire it. Many companies offer it at an hourly rental and this also includes detergent.

  1. Clear your floor

The most important thing that you need to do before starting the cleaning process is to clear off the floor area. You can stack the chair on the table, and remove all the objects that are lying on the floor. Make sure that all the objects are removed so they do not suck up into the vacuum cleaner and damage it.

Remove any kind of impression or dent on the carpet due to furniture. This can be done by rubbing ice cubes on the affected area.

  1. Use bicarbonate of soda to freshen up the carpet

Use bicarbonate of soda as a natural deodorizer. Sprinkle it in a small amount on the carpet and leave it for an hour before you start vacuuming.  This will remove any kind of bad smell from the carpet.

  1. Use Vacuum Cleaner

Before washing the carpet, vacuum the carpet to remove surface dirt. Vacuuming the carpet will help prevent the carpet washer from clogging.

  1. Remove and treat the stains

Try removing any kind of stain on the carpet like coffee, ketchup, or wine spills. However, such stains need to be removed as they happen. Use the carpet cleaning solution to treat the stains. The solution will immediately lift out the liquid. The stains can also be ironed out by using a cloth soaked in water. Place the cloth on the stain and run an iron over it. The stain will start to break up and it will be easier to remove stains and clean the carpet. If the cleaning solution is not available, you can blot the stain to lighten it. Use warm water with a little vinegar to dilute the stain.

Different types of stains require different strategies. Before going for deep cleaning, you should pre-treat the stains. You can also use Bissell pre-cleaning treatment. This will help you loosen any kind of stain and to clean the carpet thoroughly.

If the stains are organic and especially caused due to a pet-related accident, it is advisable to use a cleaner that can remove an organic stain. To test the stain remover, you can use it on an inconspicuous area of the carpet whenever you buy it. Testing the cleaner will prevent any permanent damage to the carpet while removing the stain as it happens.

  1. Leave the carpet for half an hour

After applying the stain remover, leave the carpet for about 30 minutes. However, you need to be careful that you do not over-wet your carpet. This would prevent from damaging the carpet. Do not leave it for too long as the stain remover might damage the carpet if left for too long time.

  1. Prepare the cleaning machine

In case you are using the carpet washing machine for the first time, you should carefully read the instruction manual to verify that everything is in order. Wash the tank, clear the brush bar and check its filters. If you find any problem, you should immediately go through the manual to set everything in order.

After setting up everything, fill the tank of the cleaning machine with warm water and add the cleaning solution. Remember that the machine needs to be unplugged during this. Once you have filled the tank, plug in the machine.

  1. Clean the carpet

Starting from the far corner move towards the door. This way you can prevent the accidental spills on cleaned areas of the carpet.  Slowly move back and forward while holding the spray trigger. Release trigger to spray the solution and move the cleaning machine backward on the carpet. Keep moving back and forth.

  1. Leave the carpet to dry

Open the windows of the room to ventilate it with fresh air. If the weather is too cold, you can also turn the central heating system on and leave it for a few hours. The heating system will fasten the process.
