Study Tips for High School Students

Studying in high school may be one of the hardest things a student has to do! Even if they go on to study at the hardest College or University in the world, or go on to try and get a pHd in your field of study. All of this is nothing compared to trying to study multiple subjects, awarding each of them the importance and time that they deserve. You are at such a young age as well, it’s very hard to remind yourself to keep your eyes on the prize, and strive through to the end of each year. Your attention gets pulled in a number of directions, and some days, education will seem like the enemy, and the teacher just an annoying adult that you have to see throughout the day that forces you to do work. It’s so hard to keep yourself focused throughout the years at high school, but it is definitely important. As your performance in high school will inform what you go on to do later on in life, your performance in high school will convey to you what your interests are, what you enjoy doing with your time and what you are good at. It is for these reasons that you must make the best out of high school that you possibly can, and we’re here to help you! Here are a few tips!

Don’t see work as a job

This one is obviously easier said than done, because a lot of the time the work you have to do and the homework you have to catch up on can seem more like work than a 9-5 job is! But hear me out, it is a no brainer that you end up performing better in subjects that you enjoy. This is because part of you actively looks forward to sitting down and wrestling with maths equations, or poetry or whatever the subject may be. You just need to maximise the part of you that is able to enjoy those lessons. In the spirit of this, try your hardest not to see it as work. How are you supposed to do that? Well you have to find something in each subject that you are passionate about, something that helps you to cross the border from work you are assigned, to something you have a genuine interest in. If you try and link something that you enjoy in each subject you have to do, you will definitely find it easier to work.

Give yourself time to relax

A lot of people overwork themselves when it comes to high school. They work and work and work and at the end of it they find that they are missing a part of themselves! This is because, to a certain extent, high school is too much work. There are too many people pulling your attention in different directions. What your job is, is to act maturely and look at everything you have to do in terms of its importance. If you know what you want to do when you grow up, this will be a lot easier, but take a look at the subjects you study and try and figure out which ones are the most important to you. If your dream is to be scientist, then maybe you can afford to put dance on the backburner a bit! This is by no means a suggestion to not pay attention in those classes as that attitude won’t improve anything. But all you have to do is just make sure that the most important subjects are getting the attention they deserve. If you do this, you will find that more time is freed up to relax. You may have a lot of work to do, and it may seem like you aren’t able to relax, but you must be able to give yourself some downtime, otherwise it will all get to much for you!

High school is a ridiculously hard period to wade through. The threat of detentions, failure of exams and everything else can seem pretty overwhelming when it gets right down to it. But as long as you are preparing yourself for the onslaught. And you do this by making sure you enjoy what you do with your time, and making sure you have the time to relax and unwind as well. You do this, and you will breeze through high school!
