Ensure your safety. Beach houses are usually surrounded by bush, plus many iconic beaches in Australia (or other famous beaches in the world for that matter) are remote and reached via national parks or unsealed roads and tracks. Thus, it’s crucial to make sure your house is bushfire ready.
Gutters with collected leaves are a fire hazard, so clear them as soon as you see them gather, especially during summer. Just get up there via a ladder and remove the collected waste by hand. Of course, you can always engage a professional if you’re not confident standing on a ladder to do this, just make sure the job gets done.
Keep timber shipshape. You can keep your home’s timber furniture in top condition by cleaning regularly. You can use a stiff brush to remove any sand, grime, or dust. Follow it up with a wash using a soft rag plus a combination of bleach and dishwashing liquid. You should also consider applying a sealer for more protection if the furniture needs it.
Consider whether to carpet or not. Hardwood, tiled, concrete, or laminate floors are so much easier to maintain and clean than carpets. You’ll have to choose what you can live with cleaning-wise. If you’re fine with using the vacuum out every day, then go for it, but if you have kids, you’ll need to get used to them trudging sand and dripping water over it? I guess not.
Sweep the decks. If like me you live in the deck during warmer seasons, you need to keep it nice and clean. It’s a wise idea to always have those long-handled brushes handy for a quick sweep. Choose a brush with soft bristles as they’re perfect for dusting down furniture or easily ridding the deck of sand.
Store beach stuff in a shed. Surfboards must be stored in a cooler part of your house away from the sun to protect it from damage. Think about overhead storage if space is limited. You may also place your surfboards on the trusses in the garage’s roof. Don’t forget to rinse your surf craft using it at the beach before storage.
