What is the Ramayana story in 60 seconds?

In the Valmiki Ramayana, Rama is the heir to the throne of Ayodhya, but a promise King Dasharatha made to his queen Kaikeyi sends Rama into fourteen years of exile. His wife Sita and brother Lakshmana go with him.

In the forest, the demon king Ravana of Lanka abducts Sita. Rama and Lakshmana search for her, befriend the Vanara king Sugriva and the devoted Hanuman, who finds Sita in Lanka. Rama’s allies build a way across the sea, fight a war, and Rama defeats Ravana.

The epic ends with the return to Ayodhya, followed by a later, more contested section about Sita’s fate. The makers have not said exactly where Part 1 stops, only that it ends on a cliffhanger. Official trailers do show Jatayu confronting Ravana’s flying Pushpaka Vimana, a moment tied to Sita’s abduction.

Does Sita really fight in the Ramayana?

In Valmiki’s Ramayana, Sita does not fight in the war. Some other traditions give her a martial role, most famously the Adbhuta Ramayana, where she takes the form of Kali and destroys a thousand-headed Ravana.

What does the film show?

Reports describe a brief moment in the first trailer in which Sita wields a sword; that description comes from one outlet and we have not independently confirmed it. A separate promotional video with the makers, covered by India.com and the Free Press Journal, shows Sai Pallavi’s Sita fighting demons. The trailer itself, released in late July, centres on Ravana’s rise and Rama’s journey.

What have the makers said?

Speaking at the film’s Los Angeles premiere, Tiwari said the team drew on the warrior-princess Sita of the Adbhuta Ramayana, calling it a place where “we could have taken a liberty”. He said the makers separate characters where liberties are possible from those where none should be taken, and that Rama stays true to how he is shown across familiar tellings.

What do the texts say?

In Valmiki, Sita spends her captivity in Ashoka Vatika, the garden where Hanuman finds her, and the war is fought by Rama and his allies. In the Adbhuta Ramayana, as summarised in the Sanskrit Documents text, Sita tells sages that Ravana’s elder brother, a thousand-headed demon, is the true challenge. Rama falls wounded in battle, and Sita takes the form of Kali and destroys the demon and his army. A text called the Vasishtottara Ramayana also has a chapter, “Sita Vijayam”, in which Sita defeats a hundred-headed Ravana, according to a scholarly study on WisdomLib.

So the film’s warrior Sita echoes a real textual tradition, according to the filmmakers. We do not judge it as “accurate” or “inaccurate”, and we cannot say how it plays out in the unreleased film.

Where are the real-world Ramayana locations?

Every site below is tied to the Ramayana by tradition, and none is proven by archaeology as an epic event. We label each by the strength of the evidence, using three levels: identified by tradition / pilgrimage circuit, claimed by local heritage and tourism bodies, and archaeologically supported.

Where was Ramayana (2026) filmed?

Reports say the film was shot largely in Mumbai. Mid-Day reported in 2024 that twelve sets recreating Ayodhya and Mithila were built at Film City, and IANS reported in 2025 that war sequences were shot at Aksa Beach and a Dahisar studio. An October fire near Prime Focus Studios in Film City confirmed that shooting was still under way there. Tiwari has said the look of Ayodhya, Lanka, Mithila and the forest is a creative interpretation. These are press reports, not an official location list.

What are the common questions and myths?

Three come up most: the Lakshmana Rekha, the ages of Rama and Sita, and Ravana’s heads.

Is the Lakshmana Rekha in Valmiki’s Ramayana?

No. The protective line is not in Valmiki, and the Ramcharitmanas does not feature it in the abduction scene. The idea comes from later retellings.

How old were Rama and Sita?

In the Aranya Kanda (3.47.10–11), Sita tells Ravana that Rama was twenty-five and she eighteen when the exile began. In the Sundara Kanda she says she lived twelve years in Rama’s home, so some readers calculate a very young age at marriage. Manuscripts and scholars differ on the timeline, so treat any single figure as contested.

Did Ravana have ten heads?

In Valmiki he is ten-headed. The Adbhuta Ramayana adds an elder brother with a thousand heads.

Is the film based on Valmiki or Tulsidas?

Coverage of the Los Angeles premiere describes it as adapted from Valmiki’s epic and names the Adbhuta Ramayana as the source of Sita’s warrior element. Tulsidas has not been named as a source in the makers’ statements we found.

Where can you watch Ramayana (2026)?

It is in cinemas first. Book through your usual platform, such as BookMyShow, PVR INOX or District in India, or Fandango in the US.

Advance-sale reports show Hindi screenings dominating, with Kannada and Telugu next. IMAX seats sell at a large premium over regular tickets. Check your local listing for Tamil, Malayalam and English shows, since not every cinema carries every language.

Plan for about three hours and fifteen minutes in the theatre. Reports on the runtime of the overseas cut are inconsistent, so check before you go. Deccan Herald has also reported a JioHotstar streaming release after the theatrical run, but we have no date.

Should you read the Ramayana before you watch?

You do not need to, but a little context helps. Three accessible options:

  1. Listen first. Dastan Apne Ram Ji Ki, a Red FM podcast, retells the story in short episodes of about ten minutes.
  2. Read a devotional telling. Pavan K. Varma’s The Greatest Ode to Lord Ram offers selections and commentary on Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas.
  3. Go to the source. A Penguin Classics edition of Valmiki’s Ramayana, such as Arshia Sattar’s translation, gives you the oldest surviving telling.

Frequently asked questions

When does the Ramayana (2026) movie release?

Ramayana: Rise of a Legend (Part 1) releases worldwide on 5 November 2026, in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and English. Paid previews in North America were scheduled for 4 November. Part 2 is planned for Diwali 2027. Check your local cinema listing for languages and formats.

Who is in the cast of Ramayana (2026)?

Ranbir Kapoor plays Ram, Sai Pallavi plays Sita and Yash plays Ravana. The cast also includes Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Ravi Dubey as Lakshmana, Arun Govil as Dasharatha, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari and Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha. Nitesh Tiwari directs.

How many parts is the Ramayana movie, and how long is Part 1?

The film is planned in two parts. Part 1 runs 195 minutes (3 hours 15 minutes) in its Hindi version, according to reports of its censor certificate, and Part 2 is due at Diwali 2027. Tiwari has said Part 1 ends on a cliffhanger. Overseas cuts may differ, so check your listing.

Is the Ramayana movie based on Valmiki or Tulsidas?

Coverage describes the film as adapted from Valmiki’s Sanskrit epic. Director Nitesh Tiwari has said Sita’s warrior side draws on the Adbhuta Ramayana. We found no confirmed statement naming Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas as a source, so we cannot say how the unreleased film treats episodes found only in later tellings.

Does Sita fight in the Ramayana?

Not in Valmiki’s Ramayana, where she is held captive during the war. In the Adbhuta Ramayana, Sita takes the form of Kali and destroys a thousand-headed Ravana. Nitesh Tiwari has said the film drew on that tradition for Sita’s action scenes, calling it a creative liberty.

Is the Lakshmana Rekha in the original Ramayana?

No. Valmiki’s Ramayana does not include the protective line Lakshmana draws around the hut, and Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas leaves it out of the abduction scene. It appears in later retellings and popular television versions, which is why many people assume it belongs to the original epic.

Which languages and formats will Ramayana be in?

The makers have announced Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and English versions. Formats include 3D, IMAX and premium large formats. Booking reports show Hindi 3D leading sales in India. Not every cinema carries every language or format, so confirm on your booking platform.

Where was the Ramayana (2026) movie filmed?

Reports say it was filmed mainly in Mumbai, with sets for Ayodhya and Mithila built at Film City and war scenes shot at Aksa Beach and a Dahisar studio. The makers describe the worlds of Ayodhya and Lanka as creative interpretations. There is no official location list, so treat these as press reports.

Why did Rama go into exile in the Ramayana?

In the epic, Queen Kaikeyi reminds King Dasharatha of an earlier promise. She asks that her son Bharata be crowned and that Rama be exiled for fourteen years. Dasharatha, bound by his word, agrees. Rama accepts the exile, and Sita and Lakshmana go with him.

Will Ramayana (2026) stream online?

Deccan Herald has reported that the film will stream on JioHotstar after its theatrical run, but no date has been confirmed in the reports we found. The film is currently exclusive to cinemas. Check the platform’s announcements for a release date.
