5 Ways to Maximize Space in a Tiny Room

Are you feeling pressed for space in a particular room of your home? Fear not, there are plenty of ways that you can maximize a small space.

Whether your bedroom or another room in your home that you’re looking to put to proper use, here are five ways you can make the most of the space.

1. Choose Versatile Items

People who live in small apartments and tiny homes know exactly how difficult it is to make the most of their space, but multi-functional pieces of furniture can make a huge difference. For instance, even full size sleeper sofas will only use half the space of traditional mattresses – leaving you with more precious floor space.

Think bookcases that double as dividers, dressers that double as TV stands, fold-out desks that slot neatly away when you’re not using them. You don’t necessarily have to have less functional furniture just because a room is small.

2. Get Creative with Storage Solutions

Go for tall pieces of furniture that take up very little floor space to maximize your storage options. Think tallboy-style dressers, bookcases, and cupboards.

You can also look for other underutilized but often overlooked places for storage, like behind the door and under the bed. If your door can hold hooks, try hanging a vertical organizer behind it for shoes, scarves, or jewelry.

And if those are still taking up too much space, opt for some floating shelves. Floating shelves will help you make the most of your vertical space – and they make great display surfaces for art, personal objects, and plants.

3. Hang Your Lights

Ditch the floor and table lamps – they take up a lot of space that you could be using. Instead, hand sconces or pendant lights on either side of your bed for more space and a super stylish look. Sconces with a built-in range of motion are particularly useful in small spaces.

Or you can utilize what designers call the “fifth wall” – which is your ceiling. If you can find a hanging light with a dramatic or textured shape, it can even create the illusion of the room being bigger than it actually is because it draws the eye upward and away from the floor.

4. Keep it Simple

Unfortunately, there is no magic formula as far as the layout goes. In a small room, there is usually one obvious main wall for sofa or bed placement. When deciding where to put your bed, though, don’t push it all the way into a corner.

Having walking space on either side of your bed is essential for good room flow, and it is more practical for things like making your bed.

5. Declutter

When it comes to organizing and making the most of your small space, the best way to go about it is to do some decluttering. Put everything that’s out of place away, and then look to see where you can pare down even more.

Have a fresh look at what you’re storing in the room and see if it could be stored elsewhere – for instance, sentimental keepsakes and seasonal clothing can easily be stored in another area of your home.
