India’s Begging Menace

India’s Begging Menace

begging-Menace

Since childhood I was thinking about beggars, poor, rain basera, footpath dwellers. Who are they? Where is their native place, why do they beg, come in city and keep forcing us to give something out of pity? But what I feel, if u have wound, u take medicines, do dressings till it has become your normal body parts rather than ignoring it. It was not until Modi’s movement to eradicate Begging, poverty etc. which again brought me to think whether my childhood question has solution.

Beggars are those people who without using their physical and mental strength live on grace of others. These people have choose it due to various reasons as increasing unemployment, laziness, unable to work due to their physical condition etc. There are various types of beggars as Specially Challenged, Religious (Saint and Fakir), family abandoned etc. They have different ways of begging as Singing in trains, near bus stand, sitting near Temples, door to door begging etc. Some small kids are also forcefully brought in this profession.

Once I spoke to a beggar who has committed crime in past and later society did not accept him. Other one told me he once asked few people to give work and all hesitated to help him because “he was beggar”. They don’t have any identity card representing themselves. Sometime I observe people giving money to beggars, were like donating money in “Donation box” without feeling, just to get rid of them, no pity, no affection and still feeling proud in it.

Looking for solution, what I found … India is a large country with unemployment on its peak so if you give maximum benefits for beggars, many others will also join its queue. We need to solve it as beggars population is increasing and thus decreasing Indian demography. It also makes false impression of my country. They are ready to do any crime for single penny.

Solution: In European countries, begging is crime and they have enforced various laws against begging.

  1. Complete survey with the help of NGOs to get exact fig. of beggars, reasons for begging and segregating them accordingly.
  2. Giving proper identity to existing beggars.
  3. Impose law that begging below 14yrs is crime as working in factory for kids are banned then why not begging. Begging at early age changes mindset and he can’t have complete development, paralyzing young India.
  4. Completely banning all Begging associations in India.
  5. Providing vocational training to abled body beggars in their area of interest, providing proper medication to ill , moving unclaimed kids to orphanages, old (65yrs +) to old age home etc.
  6. Ask temple and mosque authority to demotivate begging near to their campus, helping beggars to contact concern authority nearby. These religious authorities can help in survey and psychologically aiding these beggars.
  7. Ask peoples to not give them money out of pity rather than generously start talking them, accept them in our society, sharing their feelings and help to stand on their feet.

  1. It’s well written article, but it misses the important information of authority responsible for well being of beggers and also concerned authority to contact to when we see beggers on the road to report, so that they can make necessary arrangements for them.
